The Brook and The Ville
Good, solid dual meets are a rarity these days, but Bound Brook and Somerville pulled one off Monday night in front of a big crowd inside Joe Barile Gymnasium in Bound Brook. Somerset County's two oldest rivals used to be bigger rivals back in the day when there weren't as many high schools. Now they are back in the same league (Skyland Conference) and same division in wrestling (Raritan).
Somerville got a big lift from junior Nick Stitley, who led off the match with a 6-0 win over sophomore Nestor Taffur at 130. Taffur was up two weights, but Bound Brook assistant coach Marty Gleason said the Crusaders have been used to it. Taffur was the county champion at 119. But Stitley's win was the start of what would be a 39-28 Somerville win.
Somerville won nine of 14 bouts. The Pioneers helped their cause by winning three of four between 171 and 285. Rob Bolomey, the District 18 champion at 140 last year, won by fall at 145. Somerville forfeited to Bound Brook star Nick Murray. It would have been interesting to see Murray wrestle Bolomey. Bolomey is back after having suffered a broken nose early in the year.
Somerville junior Jimmy Kirchner won a rematch of the Somerset County Tournament final at 125. Kirchner beat Bound Brook sophomore Gabe Gleason 6-4 in the last bout of the night. Kirchner beat Gleason 7-0 in the county final last month.
Somerville appeared to be on the outside of the Central Jersey Group II playoffs as of last night. The power points had the Pioneers seventh, one spot out. The official power points will be released sometime Tuesday. Bound Brook has made the Central Jersey Group I field and appears to be a No. 3 seed.

Phillipsburg at B-R or North Hunterdon at Del Val?
Ok. I'm taking a chance. I'm covering Delaware Valley and North Hunterdon in Alexandria Wednesday night and bypassing the Phillipsburg-Bridgewater-Raritan match in Bridgewater.
I think Bridgewater-Raritan has a chance to beat the Stateliners for the first time. But since Delaware Valley and North Hunterdon are both schools we cover and are both ranked in the Top 20 by Gannett New Jersey, I'm going out to Del Val once again. Plus, Bridgewater-Raritan and Phillipsburg may meet again in the North 2, Group IV tournament next month.
As the old saying goes, you can't be in two places at one time -- unless you have two people covering wrestling and our paper doesn't.
North Hunterdon (10-0) at Delaware Valley 8-4), 7 p.m. Wednesday night
Possible lineups (North Hunterdon wrestlers listed first)
103: So. Kyle Woll (5-8) vs. Fr. Bobby Stevely (15-10).
112: Jr. Tony Fusco (14-5) vs. Sr. Dan Kelly (24-0).
119: Sr. Brian Levandowski (17-3) vs. Jr. Jake Rosocha (5-7).
125: Sr. Jamie Mandaglio (15-4) vs. Jr. P.J. Steinbeiser (14-10).
130: Sr. Andrew Boyle (14-6) or Jr. Chris Kane (10-2) vs. Sr. Kris Sigafoos (18-1).
135: Boyle or Kane vs. Jr. Rich Gebert (15-9).
140: Jr. Kevin Catullo (14-6) vs. Jr. Nick LaFevre (18-4, No. 4) or Jr. Rich Foor (12-14).
145: So. Bill Loftus (11-6) vs. LaFevre or Foor.
152: So. Kyle Cyphers (6-12) vs. Jr. Vinny Collura (5-5).
160: Sr. Chris Tortorello (2-11) vs. Sr. Eric Pryslak (5-12).
171: Sr. Chris Huschke (5-4) vs. Sr. Brad Gelegonya (17-5).
189: Sr. Russ Korbul (14-4) vs. Sr. Mike Limoli (6-4).
215: So. Dan Shust (12-8) vs. Jr. Ryan Huff (7-10).
285: Jr. Colin Curzi (13-5) vs. Jr. Conor Stiefken (8-9).

Ridge shuts down for a few days
pu,byline By HARRY FREZZA JR.
Staff Writer
One of the pre-season goals the Ridge High School wrestling team had this year was to qualify for the state team playoffs for the first time since 1990.
The Red Devils currently have a 6-9 dual meet record with four matches to go, so they still have a mathematical chance. But their quest has hit an obstacle.
Coach Jay Roussey said Friday night that several Red Devils have come down with impetigo, forcing the team to have postponed Wednesday night's match at Montgomery, and today's scheduled dual meet at home with Bound Brook. Roussey said he hopes the team will be able to wrestle at Phillipsburg Thursday.
Roussey said that two wrestlers had the skin rash, two others got checked and were negative and two more had their skin checked Friday. Bridgewater-Raritan postponed a match with Voorhees earlier this month because of its wrestlers came down with a skin infection, something that is common during the season.
Participation in sports that involve skin-to-skin contact, such as football or wrestling is common. Impetigo usually appears on the face, especially around an athlete's nose, mouth or arms.
"It really takes only one wrestler (to shut the schedule down," Roussey said. "It really spreads like wildfire."
He added that his school takes extensive steps to combat it.
"Our kids cannont be on our team unless they shower," he said.
Roussey said he hopes to have the meets with Montgomery and Bound Brook made up at some point. But since the season is a week shorter this year that might be difficult to accomplish. The state wrestling tournament in Alantic City has been moved up a week because Boardwalk Hall is hosting the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Touranment from March 7 to 10.
Ridge is scheduled to wrestle Phillipsburg and have a quad with Franklin, New Egypt and Matawan at Franklin next Saturday. The cutoff date for the state wrestling tournament is next Saturday. Schools must have at least a .500 record to qualify.
"It's frustrating," Roussey said. "We really wanted to wrestle Bound Brook because we like our kids to wrestle all the schools in the district (District 18)."
Bound Brook will wrestle Lawrenceville today at 1 p.m.

Del Val-Central, and other thoughts
Hackettstown stopped Delaware Valley's 45-match Skyland Conference Raritan Division winning streak Thursday night at Delaware Valley. I had written in Monday's paper that South Plainfield was looking at a brutal week this week, but Del Val's wasn't much better: Hunterdon Central Wednesday night, Hackettstown Thursday night and a tri meet with Bergen Catholic and High Point Saturday.
South Plainfield beat Hackettstown Monday night, knocked off Old Bridge Wednesday night and now prepares for Saturday's killer quad at Kittatinny with North Warren and Southern Regional.
Hunterdon Central didn't get enough bonus points from its upper weights to knock off Delaware Valley Wednesday night, but the Red Devils have closed the gap. Junior Conor Steifken had a big overtime win at 285 for the Terriers. P.J. Steinbeiser wrestled well against Central's unbeaten Pat Strizki at 125. Strizki was bumped up a weight and beat Steinbeiser 9-3.
Somerville head coach Brent McGuinness told me that District 18 champ and Region 5 runner-up Rob Bolomey should be back next week.
Look for our first Courier News wrestling podcast. Our first guests were Bridgewater-Raritan head coach Greg Evans and senior 135-pounder Adam Friedman. The podcast should be lup on our site (www.c-n.com) sometime Friday.

first rankings
Our first high school wrestling rankings for the season ran in Monday's paper and there were some omissions as usual.
At the bottom of the list, I wrote a short message, saying that only schools who've REPORTED ALL OF THEIR MATCHES would have wrestlers ranked.
If that's the case for your school, and you're a wrestler, parent or fan, please remind your coach to call us with HOME OR AWAY matches. Just in case.
Because of the season being condensed this year with the earlier state tournament date, there are more quad and triangular meets. It's become a challenge, but we'll get through it and the rankings will become more accurate as the season goes on.
Thanks!

Monday wrestling thoughts
Scotch Plains-Fanwood beat Hanover Park 34-25, but lost to Brearley 40-25 at Hanover Park Saturday morning in a triangular meet.
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood match with Brearley started at 275 and the Raiders trailed just 27-25 after Dave DeNichilo pinned Anthony Evans at 160. But the Raiders lost a regular decision at 171, a major decision loss at 189 and Brearley's Jesse Boyden pinned junior Keith Baker at 215 to close it out. Umar Tamarov beat Mike Zamzam 5-2 at 171 to give Brearley a 30-25 lead.
A good effort by the Raiders, who have a big home meet Friday night with Rahway at 7.

South Plainfield-Delaware Valley follow
There is a good chance Delaware Valley will get another crack at South Plainfield in the Central Jersey Group II playoffs come February. Can the Terriers close the gap by then? Delaware Valley lost 10 of 14 bouts Thursday night at home as South Plainfield rolled 47-16. South Plainfield scored bonus victories in seven bouts.
"Hopefully we'll see them again and we can do it again," said South Plainfield head coach Kevin McCann. "It could go either way, there were a lot of close matches in there. Obviously we thought this would be much closer than this."
The Terriers won the Central Jersey Group II title last year, but lost to Kittatinny in the state group final. South Plainfield, beaten in the regular season by Del Val last year, went on to win the state Group III title.
The state team sectionals are Feb. 6 and 8 and the state group finals are Sunday, Feb. 11.
South Plainfield has won four state group titles, while Del Val has won eight. But unbeaten Hackettstown, a North Jersey, Section 2, Group II school, is having a memorable season and will pose a challenge for both.
"We're not out of it, but we also can't focus on the next time we wrestle; our schedule is too tough to just concentrate on them in the sectional finals," Delaware Valley coach Brent Conly said. "Our goal every year is to win the Group 2s and that hasn't changed."
South Plainfield has a busy week coming up. The Tigers start with a trip to unbeaten Hackettstown Monday night, then have a home match against Greater Middlesex Red Division foe Old Bridge Wednesday night followed by a big quad meet Saturday with North Warren and Southern Regional at Kittatinny Saturday.
Southern Regional was the state Group IV runnerup last year. Kittatinny won the Group II title and North Warren made the state Group I final four.
