Franklin's 135-pounder wins the Region 5 title, he would be the first Warrior to win a region title since Mimnaugh Hill won in 1994. Other Franklin region champs have been Kevin Arline (1988) and Chris Marino (1983). This dates back to 1980.

Mattes approved

The North Hunterdon/Voorhees Board of Education approved John Mattes as the new North Hunterdon High head football coach Tuesday night. Mattes had been offensive coordinator the last two years for former coach Dennis Haughey.

He is a social studies teacher at North. Mattes is a graduate of Bethlehem Catholic High (Pa.) where he was quarterback for a state title team. His coach was current Phillipsburg head coach Bob Stem. Mattes later played at Moravian College.

A little football news....

I've been told that we'll have a new football coach at North Hunterdon High late Tuesday night. The approval will come at a meeting of the North Hunterdon-Voorhees Board of Education. We'll try to get that posted as quickly as possible. Former longtime coach Dennis Haughey stepped down after last season.

District review

Bound Brook assistant coach Marty Gleason is the historian and keeper of the Crusader archives. But he is now a color coordinator.

Those folks in the brown, red and white singlets at the District 18 Tournament were the Bound Brook Crusaders. The Crusaders' throwbacks were a nod to the program's 75th anniversary. Gleason needed approval from school administrators to do it. Bound Brook's original colors were brown and white before Mike Schibanoff -- a future National Wrestling Hall of Famer -- changed the colors to red and white in the mid 1940s. Schibanoff, a legendary wrestling figure in these parts, was an athletic director and coach for the Crusaders for many years.

There was some grumblings Saturday about the NJSIAA policy of having two separate entrances into the district tournament. Fans had to pay $6 for the first round of wrestling, then leave the gym before semifinals, re-enter, then pay another $6 in a separate admission. That was caused by Friday's cancellations. Most folks would have paid $12 at the first entrance rather than havng to wander around their various sites before re-entering.

Somerville had four district champions -- one more than champion Hillsborough and third-place Bound Brook. Junior 285-pounder Christian Mackey, who was beaten in the county tournament semifinals and didn't place, was one of the Pioneer winners. Mackey hasn't lost since a setback in the county tournament consolation semifinals to Bridgewater-Raritan's Padraic Czekaj. Mackey, who pinned Czekaj in the district semifinals, is 30-4. Mackey lost to Czekaj twice and to Hunterdon Central's Brad Bormann (Caldwell Tournament, fall 1:16) and Watchung Hills' Mark Wroblewski (county semifinals 9-4). Wroblewski, the county champ at 275, won the District 12 title at 215.
Mackey beat Bormann in a dual meet last week.
""Christian has avenged every loss he's had (at his weight),'' said Somerville coach Brent McGuinness, who will have seven wrestlers in the regions. ""He's quietly had a great season.''
Mackey was joined by three-time district champ Jimmy Kirchner (125), sophomore Micah Blair (140) and junior Dan Soffer (152). Soffer, third in the county, beat Hillsborough senior Luke Dawson. Dawson beat Soffer 7-2 in the county semifinals, but Soffer got the top seed at the districts by beating Soffer in a dual meet two weeks ago. Blair was second to Bound Brook junior Gabe Gleason at 140 in the county. Gleason won the 130-pound district title. Bound Brook junior Henry Shapiro, fourth at 119 in the county, won the district title at the same weight.
Bound Brook freshman 189-pounder Andrew Campolattano didn't seem to be bothered by a kidney stone. He raised his record to 36-0 with falls of 18 seconds, 1:44 and 37 seconds.
""I have to drink more water,'' he said.
Nine of Hillsborough's 11 region qualifiers are underclassmen. Dawson (second at 152) and Kevin Campanale (third at 189) are the seniors. Freshman T.J. Guidice (112), junior Will Goddiess (145) and junior Max Borisenko (215) were district champions.

North Hunterdon goings and comings?

Easton Express Times reported today that Charles Brown, North Hunterdon High School's head boys basketball coach, has resigned.

Also, it looks like John Mattes, an assistant coach under longtime head North football coach Dennis Haughey, is the front runner to take over in the fall. The North Hunterdon-Voorhees School Board is scheduled to make an official decision public next week.

Somerset County Tournament to be moved?

I was told today that there's a good chance that the annual Somerset County Wrestling Tournament will be moved from Christmas week to the third weekend in January, starting next year.

The meet would be held Saturday. It makes a huge amount of sense and will get the event vast more exposure. The Greater Middlesex Conference and Union County tournaments are also held in January.

The meet will continue to be held at Hillsborough. There still needs to be official approval by the admnistrators at county schools, but this makes a lot of sense.

Makes kind of sense to give your wrestlers a good chunk of dual meets before having a county tournament.

North Hunterdon, Bound Brook notes

Funny scene Friday night late in the North 2 Group IV wrestling final between Phillipsburg-North Hunterdon match that was won by the host Stateliners 48-6.

To add salt to the wounds, the Phillipsburg public address announcer informed the crowd that the Phillipsburg boys basketball team had beaten North Hunterdon in the Hunterdon/Warren Tournament quarterfinals. The Liner crowd roarded.

But, not to be denied, the North Hunterdon crowd responded with "We beat you in soccer.'' Even the coaches on the North bench had to laugh at that one.

Saturday's quad meet at Middlesex between Bound Brook, Middlesex, Lodi and Scotch Plains-Fanwood, turned out to be interesting. Bound Brook freshman 189-pounder Andrew Campolattano beat Lodi senior Dan Rinaldi 1-0. Rinaldi pushed up from 171 to take the challenge at '89. Good for him. Rinaldi was fourth in the state tournament last year at 171.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood-Middlesex match on the other side of the gym was actually stopped so everybody could see the match.
The unbeaten Camp, who set a Crusader season record for wins with 33, did get hit for stalling in the first period, but he apparently did enough the rest of the way. In the second period Rinaldi took bottom, but Camp rode him out. Camp escaped quickly in the third period and did have some scoring opportunities in the match for more.

The junior-dominated Bound Brook club finished with a 10-15 dual meet record. The Crusaders expected more. They will get a chance to atone for a subpar Somerset County Tournament performance in December this weekend at the District 18 Tournament at Hillsborough. Bound Brook swept the quad Saturday. So they'll be coming in with some momentum.

Ridge set a single-season record for wins at 21 this year.

Montgomery to Sayreville

Because of our new deadline times, we weren't able to get Montgomery's wins over Belleville (43-29) and Mendham (34-30) in the newspaper this week. But, obviously, the Cougars have really made an impact in the North 2 Group III tournament.

Just in their second year of varsity wrestling, Montgomery has earned a spot in the sectional final tonight at top-seed Sayreville. Who'd have thought it?

The sixth-seeded Cougars (17-7) have had similar experiences in baseball in recent years as a low seed that made it to the the sectional final

But Montgomery's wrestling team is just in its second year. They beat third seed Belleville in the section quarters Monday night, then eliminated No. 2 Mendham Thursday night.

I spoke to Montgomery assistant coach Kurt Franey late Thursday night and Kurt told me Montgomery had a 31-9 lead at one point against Mendham.

Here's the box score from the section semi:

Montgomery 34, Mendham 30
215: Conor Gaul (Mendham), d. Norm James (Montgomery), 5-3.
HWT: Giovanni Balena (Montgomery), d. Aaron Dewitt (Mendham), 6-5.
103: Erik Biago (Montgomery), p. Phil Palone (Mendham), 1:58.
112: John Moyle (Montgomery), p. Steve Jambor (Mendham), 3:36.
119: Tom Reynolds (Montgomery), d. Dan Turney (Mendham), 13-2.
125: Tyler Bobal (Montgomery), p. David Johnston (Mendham), 5:56.
130: MIke Oake (Montgomery), p. Joe Beckford (Mendham), :50.
135: J.D. Inelli (Mendham), p. Abe Kahn (Montgomery), :23.
140: Mike Glancey (Mendham), d. Matthias Cassar (Montgomery), 7-2.
145: Bill Harrington (Mendham), d. Nick Cassar (Montgomery), 2-0.
152: Alex Sottile (Montgomery), d. Brandon Van Seters (Mendham), 3-2.
160: Kevin Orchard (Mendham), d. Abdel Abouhaib (Montgomery), 4-3.
171: Nick Erdenberger (Mendham), p. Alex Balthasar (Montgomery), 2:54.
189: Brian Byrne (Mendham), won by forfeit.

Here's a story on my cousin Sarah, who has been working for MTV. She's a Hunterdon Central High grad and a Yankee fan.

Region 5 and other stuff

Talked to interim Franklin High School Athletic Director Bob Grace the other day. He told me that Franklin has written to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association asking for consideration to host the Region 5 tournament.

Hunterdon Central has hosted the three-day tournament for years, but there seems to be complaints for various reasons about the site. A lot has to do with schools like Old Bridge and Sayreville and South Brunswick having to travel so far.

Franklin would be a good compromise.

The region site was rotated between Piscataway and Hunterdon Central in the 1980s. Franklin has a sparkling, spacious new gymnasium. The state should seriously consider it. Why not? Change is good and Franklin WANTS it.

Covered Governor Livingston and Rahway this morning in Berkeley Heights. Governor Livingston is a team of the future. Thirteen of the Highlander's 14 weights are taken by underclassmen -- including six freshmen.

GL pounded out a 45-30 win. It will be interesting to see how GL does Monday night in a North 2 Group II quarterfinal at Hackettstown.

North Hunterdon opening

Heard through a few sources that the North Hunterdon football job -- vacated when longtime head coach Dennis Haughey resigned after last season -- will be filled in the next few weeks.

I've heard that New Brunswick head coach John Quinn and Cranford head coach Erik Rosenmeier have applied.

North Hunterdon finished 4-6 last fall.
