Funny scene Friday night late in the North 2 Group IV wrestling final between Phillipsburg-North Hunterdon match that was won by the host Stateliners 48-6.
To add salt to the wounds, the Phillipsburg public address announcer informed the crowd that the Phillipsburg boys basketball team had beaten North Hunterdon in the Hunterdon/Warren Tournament quarterfinals. The Liner crowd roarded.
But, not to be denied, the North Hunterdon crowd responded with "We beat you in soccer.'' Even the coaches on the North bench had to laugh at that one.
Saturday's quad meet at Middlesex between Bound Brook, Middlesex, Lodi and Scotch Plains-Fanwood, turned out to be interesting. Bound Brook freshman 189-pounder Andrew Campolattano beat Lodi senior Dan Rinaldi 1-0. Rinaldi pushed up from 171 to take the challenge at '89. Good for him. Rinaldi was fourth in the state tournament last year at 171.
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood-Middlesex match on the other side of the gym was actually stopped so everybody could see the match.
The unbeaten Camp, who set a Crusader season record for wins with 33, did get hit for stalling in the first period, but he apparently did enough the rest of the way. In the second period Rinaldi took bottom, but Camp rode him out. Camp escaped quickly in the third period and did have some scoring opportunities in the match for more.
The junior-dominated Bound Brook club finished with a 10-15 dual meet record. The Crusaders expected more. They will get a chance to atone for a subpar Somerset County Tournament performance in December this weekend at the District 18 Tournament at Hillsborough. Bound Brook swept the quad Saturday. So they'll be coming in with some momentum.
Ridge set a single-season record for wins at 21 this year.
